Matt Sentry wins ANCOLD Award

Belated congratulations to Geotech Civil's Matt Sentry, recently awarded the Young Professionals Best Paper at the ANCOLD (Australian National Committee On Large Dams Incorporated) 2016 Conference, held in Adelaide over 18-19 October.

The award was for his paper tilted Construction of a high capacity post tensioned permanent carbon fibre ground anchor, one which highlighted the research and work completed to date on the carbon fibre anchor. This innovative technology is a world first, with many advantages over a conventional steel anchor. Matt’s presentation included photos and methodologies used installing a test anchor at Yass Dam.

The award was presented by Richard Rodd (Principal at Richard Rodd & Associates), who said the research Matt and Geotech are doing will revolutionise the anchoring industry, and how great it is that a contracting company is investing in such development and innovation.

About the ANCOLD Conference

The annual conference is held in various locations around Australia and New Zealand and provides a chance for all workers in the dam and water industry to get together to review and assess new design techniques, guidelines and changes in standards. The 2-day conference has various speakers presenting papers on various technical construction and design issues currently facing the industry.

The theme of ANCOLD 2016 was DAMS – A Lasting Legacy, with the conference focusing on the enduring value of dams to the broader community: "Remaining relevant requires ongoing change. The conference explores how our industry is responding to the demands of today; by reducing risk, improving operator occupational health and safety, minimising life cycle costs and providing secure and cost effective tailings storage."

A conference tour included visits to Kanmantoo Mine, Mount Bold Dam, South Para Dam and Kangaroo Creek Dam.
